It’s always frustrating when your home isn’t consistently comfortable, and having hot and cold spots is no exception. While those kinds of uneven temperatures don’t necessarily indicate a major problem, they do typically mean that something isn’t quite right with your household systems. That said, hot and cold spots have a variety of potential causes, and it typically takes a bit of troubleshooting to figure out exactly what’s wrong. If it seems as though the climate in your living space is regularly uneven, it’s worth trying out some of these possible solutions.
1. Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up
If you’re noticing that your heating and cooling systems aren’t effectively circulating conditioned air to every area of your home, it’s possible that you need an HVAC tune-up. When your HVAC system becomes overly dirty or encounters a mechanical problem, the result may be that it can no longer generate consistent airflow to keep your entire dwelling comfortable. During professional maintenance, your hired technician will clean the unit out and inspect it for any problems. Then, if necessary, they can apply any needed fixes to improve the system’s health, efficiency, and performance. After this important service, you may notice that your hot and cold spots are a thing of the past.
2. Clean Your Air Vents
If any of the air vents around your home are obstructed or overly dirty, that could be the cause of the hot and cold spots you’re experiencing. For your heating and cooling appliances to be able to keep your living space comfortable, they need to be able to consistently distribute air through all your vents. So, if one room has a clogged or blocked vent, some or all of the conditioned air will be prevented from flowing through. Fortunately, if this is the cause of your uneven temperatures, it should be a simple problem to fix.
First, visit each of your home’s vents and check that nothing has been inadvertently moved in front of them. Then, use a screwdriver to remove each vent’s cover and, using a vacuum extension hose, clean the interior of each one. Iif you can, try to repeat this task every month or two to make things as easy as possible on your HVAC system.
3. Switch Out Your HVAC Air Filters
If your HVAC air filters are completely packed with contaminant particles, the performance of your heating and cooling systems will be directly impacted. When the filters are clogged, the airflow becomes restricted, and that makes it much harder for the appliances to circulate air. As a result, the hot and cold air may not be reaching certain areas of your home, which can create an uneven overall climate. So, when you’re trying to get rid of hot and cold spots, replacing your HVAC air filters with new ones should be one of your first troubleshooting attempts.
4. Get Your Ductwork Cleaned
Your home’s air ducts serve as the pathways for your HVAC system to distribute air around your home. If any area of the ductwork becomes clogged with dust, dirt, and debris, though, the conditioned air from your heating and cooling units won’t be able to consistently push through. Alternatively, if the ducts are harboring any leaks, large amounts of that circulated air will be seeping out before it can reach your living space. Scheduling a professional duct cleaning can solve both of these issues. Your hired professional will thoroughly clean your ductwork and check for any air leaks or damage.
5. Install a Zoning System
If you have some extra money to spend, a zoning system may be the perfect way to solve your problem with uneven household temperatures. These modern systems allow you to manually control the climates in specific areas of your home. That means you can decide whether you want the whole dwelling to be the same temperature or for some rooms to be warmer or colder than others. These systems are pricey, but you’ll almost certainly notice an increase in home comfort and energy efficiency.
